The Graduate Program in Nursing (PEN) at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) achieved concept 6/7 (course concept/maximum concept on the CAPES scale) in the last triennial evaluation in 2012. It was created in 1976 with a Master’s Degree and has offered a Doctorate since 1993. In terms of its scope, the program has consolidated its significant regional, national and international presence.

In terms of social insertion and national solidarity, this program has played an outstanding role, promoting the graduation of masters and doctors through Expanded Courses with the Postgraduate Promotion Network of the Southern Region (REPENSUL) in the 90s. With the creation of the Network linking five Hubs in the Southern Region to the promoter UFSC, namely: Federal University of Paraná, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Federal University of Santa Maria, Federal University of Pelotas and the University of Rio Grande Foundation. This movement has boosted postgraduate studies and the number of masters and doctors, as well as the creation of the Application for New Course Proposals (APCN) in these five Hubs. Therefore, the development of postgraduate studies in the Southern Region is due to PEN/UFSC, which has spared no effort to achieve the reality that is now consolidated.
